Today, I was buddy riding on the back trails with another student at Gray’s. Our two horses are not particularly fond of each other and, yet, Koal was happy to follow Penny. Maybe it was because the humans riding them are still learning to lead them or maybe it was just because he had no better options, but it was interesting to watch Koal bicker with Penny while we were stopped and then fall right in behind her once we started moving again.
I wonder how many times we do that in our lives. We follow others that we might not like or even agree with just because there are no other options or we’re not sure how to lead instead of that person. For horses, maybe it’s not such a big deal but…for humans…I can’t help but wonder about the dangers of following so easily. The world today seems so divided and seems to be becoming even more divided as more and more people with different opinions – even if only slightly different – capture our attention through any number of in-your-face-all-of-the-time social media outlets. Sometimes I feel as if the world, in general, doesn’t know who to follow so they just follow the one that is loudest, newest or most different this week.
I don’t despair, though. The voice I seek to follow above all has already overcome the worst division that exists: death. What else can come close?
